Pyronotanthias flavoguttatus (often called the Red Saddled Anthias) is a reef-safe planktivore with a pink-to-orange body, a distinct red “saddle,” and yellow spotting that shows clearly in the water column. This species is naturally associated with deeper reef slopes and tends to look best when it has rock ledges and overhangs nearby for quick cover.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering and cruising in the mid-water, especially when food hits the water
- A “follow-the-leader” group routine when kept as a small harem
- The dominant fish spending more time out front as it settles in
- Quick, upward dashes to grab small foods, then returning to the same general swim zone
Provide a larger, stable reef with plenty of caves/overhangs plus open swimming room, and offer small meaty foods in multiple small feedings to match their high metabolism. Many keepers have the best long-term rhythm by combining frozen foods with a quality pellet from an auto-feeder during the day.
How long does it usually take a new flavoguttatus anthias to start spending time in the open?
Many settle into a predictable “out-and-about” routine as they learn where food arrives and which ledges they can retreat to quickly.
Do they do better as a single fish, a pair, or a small group?
They’re most often kept as a small harem (one male with multiple females) so their social behavior looks natural and stable.
What foods tend to work best once they’re eating consistently?
Small, water-column foods are the most practical’mysis, enriched brine, copepod-sized frozen blends, and small pellets they can pick off mid-water.
Is it normal for them to claim one “corner” of the tank even in a big aquarium?
Yes’many anthias will establish a preferred swim lane near a specific overhang or rock face and use that area as their home base.
Do they need a lid even if they seem calm?
A fitted lid is a common choice with anthias because quick startle responses can include upward dashes, especially during the first weeks.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
