The Ghost Ribbon Eel (also called the White Ribbon Eel) is a long, slender moray with a pale body and darker spotting around the head and face. It’s a reef-associated predator that typically spends much of the day anchored in a chosen burrow with its head extended.
What You’ll Observe:
- Establishes a favorite burrow and regularly “periscopes” from the same opening
- Makes short cruising laps at dusk or after lights-out, then returns to cover
- Responds to food by scent and learns a consistent feeding routine
- Does best when food is offered near its burrow entrance
Provide stable rockwork with tight crevices plus a sand/rubble zone it can use for burrow placement, and keep the top fully sealed. Offer meaty marine foods in small pieces (shrimp, squid, fish, krill) and present them with feeding tongs or a feeding stick at the same spot each time to build a reliable response.
Why is my Ghost Ribbon Eel hiding and not eating at first?
New arrivals often stay in their burrow while they settle into the tank’s day/night rhythm. A consistent feeding spot near the burrow entrance helps it begin taking food on schedule.
What’s the easiest way to switch it from live foods to frozen?
Offer scent-rich pieces on tongs or a feeding stick right at the burrow opening. Once it strikes reliably, keep the same time and delivery method while gradually reducing live offerings.
Can it be kept with ornamental shrimp or small crabs?
Most keepers treat small crustaceans as potential prey because this eel hunts by scent. If shrimp are a priority, many hobbyists plan for separate housing or accept that the eel may eventually target them.
Do I need a tight lid even if the waterline is low?
Yes’morays explore and can push through surprisingly small gaps around lids, cords, and plumbing. A fully sealed top (including blocked gaps) keeps the setup secure.
Can I keep a pair together?
This species is most often kept singly, and pairing attempts are typically done only in very large systems with multiple separate burrows. If attempted, providing abundant rockwork and more than one defined shelter point helps spread space use.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
