The Goldbar Wrasse (Thalassoma hebraicum) is a reef-associated wrasse from the western Indian Ocean, known for fast, open-water cruising and bold color patterning typical of Thalassoma “banana wrasses.” This species reaches about 23 cm (around 9 inches) in length, so it looks best in a display where it has room to move between rockwork and open lanes.
What You’ll Observe:
- Regular “patrol” loops across the front and around rock structures
- Quick darting bursts followed by smooth, steady cruising
- Strong awareness of feeding time and fast response to offered foods
- A consistent routine of exploring the same routes day after day
Provide sturdy rockwork with multiple pass-throughs and open swimming space, and use a tight-fitting lid since Thalassoma wrasses are capable jumpers. Offer a mix of meaty frozen foods and quality pellets once or twice daily to keep activity and body condition consistent.
Will it change color or pattern as it matures?
Many Thalassoma wrasses shift coloration as they grow and as social rank changes, so it’s normal for the look to evolve over time.
Is it normal for a wrasse to disappear into the sand for a few days after shipping?
Some wrasses will spend a short “settling” period out of sight; once comfortable, they typically resume a predictable daily circuit.
Can it be kept with snails, hermits, or ornamental shrimp long-term?
Keepers often report better results with a well-fed wrasse and a cleanup crew that isn’t made up of very small individuals.
How do I reduce chasing when adding new fish later?
Introducing new tankmates with a short acclimation-box period can help everyone visually adjust before full contact, especially with active wrasses.
Can I keep more than one Goldbar Wrasse together?
Thalassoma are commonly discussed as harem-structured wrasses (one dominant male with females), so planning introductions and sizes thoughtfully tends to work better than trying to force a “matched pair.”
Hand-selected for vibrant color and active behavior—arrives ready to thrive in your reef.
