The Golden Headed Sleeper Goby (Valenciennea strigata) is a sand-sifting goby with a yellow-gold head and a fine blue facial stripe over a pale body. Native to the Indo-Pacific, it spends most of its day working sandy areas and keeping the upper layer of substrate turned over.
What You’ll Observe:
- Regular “scoop-and-sift” laps across the sand bed, followed by clean sand pushed out in small streams
- A home base under a rock edge, with a burrow entrance that changes shape from day to day
- Quick dashes between open sand and cover, with frequent pauses to perch and watch the tank
- During feeding time, it often rises into the water column to grab small meaty pieces
Provide an established sand bed with open bottom space and secure rockwork that cannot shift from digging. Offer a variety of small meaty foods (like mysis, brine, and finely chopped seafood) and include some sinking options so it can feed naturally near the substrate. A tight-fitting lid helps keep active sand sifters safely in the aquarium.
Why does my goby “disappear” for a day or two?
It’s often remodeling a burrow under or behind rockwork, and may only show briefly between sand-sifting runs.
Will it pair with a pistol shrimp like a watchman goby?
This species uses burrows, but it isn’t typically kept for the classic watchman/pistol shrimp partnership.
Is it normal for it to build sand mounds in one area?
Yes—many sleeper gobies concentrate digging near a preferred burrow entrance and create small dunes.
How can I keep it from dusting nearby frags with sand?
Place low frags slightly higher on rock or a small stand so the sand stream falls short of the coral.
Does sand-sifting always make the tank look cloudy?
A little haze can happen right after active digging, and it usually clears as filtration catches fine particles.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
