The Goldspotted Rabbitfish (Siganus punctatus) is a constant grazer that helps with algae control on rockwork and hard surfaces in larger reef tanks. It has a pale blue to tan base color covered in tight golden-orange spotting, giving it a “spotted spinefoot” look common in siganids.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady cruising along the rock line with frequent stops to pick at film algae and short turf algae
- A regular routine of grazing throughout the day, with quick bursts of speed between feeding spots
- Color pattern shifts that look more muted when resting and more defined when active
- Calm, “neutral” behavior around most tankmates while it focuses on foraging
Provide plenty of mature live rock and open swimming room so it can graze naturally and settle into a predictable loop around your aquascape. Offer dried seaweed (nori) plus herbivore pellets and frozen foods with spirulina to keep feeding consistent. In a mixed reef, regular feeding helps it stay focused on algae and prepared foods.
Why do some Goldspotted Rabbitfish look “blotchy” or change color at night?
It’s a normal camouflage/resting response. Many rabbitfish shift to a more muted pattern when resting and return to their daytime look when active.
What foods get the best long-term feeding response besides algae in the tank?
Most do best with a daily mix of nori on a clip plus herbivore pellets and spirulina-based frozen blends. Rotating greens helps keep them engaged and grazing.
Which corals are most likely to be sampled first if it decides to nip?
Keepers most often mention fleshy LPS and some soft coral polyps as the first targets. Consistent feeding and easy access to nori often reduces “testing” behavior.
Does it need to be “taught” to eat nori?
Many begin picking at a nori clip within the first few days once they learn where it appears. Placing the clip near their grazing route usually speeds this up.
What’s the easiest way to move one without getting stuck in the spines?
Use a specimen container or a large bag-in-a-box method instead of tight nets when possible. Slow, controlled scooping is usually smoother for both you and the fish.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
