The Green Banded Goby (Elacatinus multifasciatus, also listed as Tigrigobius multifasciatus) is a nano reef goby known for perching on rockwork and picking at tiny live foods in the water column and on nearby surfaces. It has a dark green body with pale vertical bands and a distinct facial stripe with a small red accent near the eye. Native to the western Atlantic, it’s a good fit for reef tanks where you want a small, rock-dwelling fish that stays visible and active around its chosen perch.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on a favorite rock ledge, then making short dashes to grab food
- “Checking” nearby fish as they pass, especially around feeding time
- Using small crevices and holes as a quick retreat between foraging trips
- Settling into a consistent daily routine and returning to the same zone often
Provide a mature tank with plenty of live rock, small caves, and gentle-to-moderate flow so it can perch and feed naturally. Offer small meaty foods (like finely chopped seafood, mysis, and other small frozen options) in multiple small feedings so it can grab bites without rushing. It does best when the aquascape gives it a clear “home base” near the front where you can observe its normal foraging behavior.
Do Green Banded Gobies actually “clean” other fish in aquariums?
Many will show occasional cleaning behavior, but they still do best when you feed them regularly like any other small carnivorous goby.
Why does this goby stay in one small area of the tank?
They often choose a specific perch or rock face as a home base and work a tight circuit around it, especially once they learn where food arrives.
Can I keep more than one Green Banded Goby together?
Some hobbyists keep them as a single fish, while others keep pairs or small groups when the tank has multiple perching spots and plenty of separation.
Do they need a sea urchin to feel “comfortable”?
They don’t require one in captivity, but they do appreciate complex rockwork with narrow gaps and textured surfaces that mimic their natural perching areas.
How do I make sure it gets food in a community reef?
Feeding smaller particle foods more than once per day and occasionally placing a small cloud of food near its perch helps it eat calmly and consistently.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
