Green Chromis (Chromis viridis) is a small reef chromis with a light blue upper body that fades into green along the sides. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, it’s often seen hovering in the water column near branching structure, adding consistent midwater movement in reef tanks.
What You’ll Observe:
- Holding position in midwater, then making short dashes to grab suspended food
- Choosing a “home” area (often near branching rockwork/coral-like structure) and returning to it between laps
- Staying loosely grouped most of the day, then tightening up briefly when startled
- Settling into crevices or branching areas at lights-out, then reappearing soon after lights-on
Provide open swimming room plus branching rockwork so the fish can hover confidently near cover in a 30-gallon-or-larger aquarium. Offer small foods that stay in suspension (fine frozen foods, small pellets, and flakes) in a few smaller feedings so multiple fish can feed evenly. Stable reef parameters support long-term color and day-to-day activity.
Do Green Chromis form a tight “school” all day?
In most home aquariums they act like a loose shoal that tightens up briefly when startled or when food hits the water.
Why does one Chromis hang in a single coral branch or corner for long periods?
Many individuals pick a favorite “home” spot near branching structure and use it as a base between short swims.
Is quick chasing between Chromis normal even in an otherwise calm tank?
A small pecking order is common, and brief chasing—especially around feeding moments—can be part of normal spacing behavior.
Do Green Chromis sleep out in the open?
Most wedge into rockwork or branching areas at night and then come back to midwater once the tank lights are on.
Can Green Chromis be mixed with other Chromis species?
It can be done in larger community systems, but many hobbyists report more predictable group behavior when keeping one Chromis species per tank.
