The Green Silk Gudgeon Dartfish (Ptereleotris microlepis) is a slender, open-water hoverer with an iridescent green-to-silver body and subtle blue accents on the face and gill area. Found around sandy reef edges in the Indo-Pacific, it brings calm movement to reef tanks where it can pause in the water column and retreat to cover.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering in place above the sand, then quick “dart” swims back to a preferred spot
- Using a low cave or rubble area as a regular home base, especially early on
- More visible activity around feeding time, with fast midwater strikes at small foods
- If kept as a pair, two fish often hold the same area and cruise together
To help your Green Silk Gudgeon settle in, provide a sand bottom with loose coral rubble/rockwork and keep open swimming space in front. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and enriched brine) multiple times per day so it can feed the way it naturally does in the water column. A tight-fitting lid helps maintain a calm, consistent environment for dartfish-style swimmers.
Can this fish “disappear” for a few days after introduction?
It’s common for a new specimen to spend most of its time close to its chosen cave or rubble zone at first. As it learns the feeding routine, it typically spends longer periods hovering out in the open.
Do they prefer a specific type of “home base” in the aquascape?
Many keepers notice they pick a low overhang, small cave, or rubble pocket near the sand. Building a few sheltered pockets along the bottom gives them options to choose from.
Will a pair always stay bonded and visible together?
Pairs often share the same general territory and hover near each other, especially once established. In larger setups, they may still take short solo loops and then regroup at the same shelter.
Do they accept pellets, or do they need only frozen foods?
After they’re eating well, many dartfish-type feeders will take appropriately sized pellets along with frozen foods. A mix of small meaty options usually keeps feeding consistent.
Why does the color sometimes look more silver than green?
Color intensity can shift with lighting spectrum, background, and the fish’s moment-to-moment posture in the water column. Under bluer lighting and when settled in a preferred spot, the green sheen is often more noticeable.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
