The Greyface (White-eyed) Moray (Gymnothorax thyrsoideus) is a thick-bodied moray with a tan-to-brown speckled pattern, a grayish head, and distinctive pale eyes. It spends much of the day stationed in a crevice with its head out, then becomes more active as the lights dim.
What You’ll Observe:
- Settling into a favorite “den” and regularly peeking out from the same rock opening
- Short, deliberate cruising runs’especially at dusk and after feeding time
- A strong feeding response once it learns your routine, often taking food directly from tongs
- Periodic sand burrowing to conceal its body while keeping its head visible
Provide stable rockwork with cracks and caves, plus a sandy area it can burrow into, and keep every opening in the lid/overflow tightly covered. Offer a variety of meaty marine foods using feeding tongs so it can target the food confidently and learn a consistent feeding pattern.
Why does it keep its mouth open while resting?
This is normal for many morays and is typically just how they ventilate their gills while staying in their den.
Is it normal for a new one to hide for long stretches?
Yes’many settle in by choosing one secure cave first, then gradually spend more time out once the tank’s daily rhythm feels predictable.
Will it burrow and “redecorate” the sandbed?
It may push into sand to conceal itself; keeping rock structures set on the bottom (not on loose sand) helps everything stay stable.
Can I keep it with another moray eel?
Some hobbyists keep multiple morays successfully when there are multiple separate hiding spots so each eel can claim a den and rotate space calmly.
How do I eel-proof small gaps around lids and overflows?
Cover gaps with fitted lid pieces and overflow guards (mesh/egg-crate/acrylic panels) so there’s no path along the rim or into the weir.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
