The Harlequin Bass (Serranus tigrinus) is a Western Atlantic/Caribbean sea bass with a high-contrast pattern in black, tan, white, and yellow. It tends to hold close to rock ledges and rubble zones, and it can reach a notably larger adult size than many “basslet” types.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering near a favorite cave or overhang
- Quick, direct strikes at meaty foods at feeding time
- Short patrols around its chosen rock section
- More consistent “out and about” behavior once it learns your routine
For best results, provide multiple caves/crevices and clear sight-breaks so it can claim a home base without needing to control the whole tank. Offer meaty frozen foods (like mysis and chopped seafood) and keep feeding times consistent so it settles in and shows itself regularly.
Why did it disappear into the rockwork for days?
Many keepers report an “all caves at first” phase that improves as it learns the feeding schedule.
Will it eat my cleaner shrimp?
Large cleaners are usually ignored; very small shrimp can be treated as food.
Can it be kept with other basslets/grammas?
Often kept singly unless the tank is very large with many caves.
Do the colors stay as bold long-term?
Some keepers note the contrast can soften over time.
Is a lid necessary?
It can bolt when startled, so a snug screen top helps.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
