The Hasselts Goby (Callogobius hasseltii) is a small flaphead goby that works the lower rockwork, picking at tiny worms and other micro-prey, which can support pest control in reef tanks. Its mottled tan-and-brown pattern blends into live rock, and it spends most of its time perched rather than cruising the water column. This is a good fit for nano reef setups where you want an interesting bottom-dweller without disrupting corals.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, quick “hop and perch” moves along the sand line and rock ledges
- Frequent pauses facing into gentle flow, watching for food drifting past
- Most visible around feeding time, especially when fine foods reach the bottom
- Uses one or two favorite crevices as a home base and returns there between patrols
Provide mature live rock with multiple small caves and ledges so it can settle in and claim a home base. Offer small meaty foods—mysis, finely chopped seafood, and sinking micro-pellets—and aim some food near the bottom 1–2 times daily. With peaceful nano fish and consistent feeding, it maintains an active, perching routine in the open.
How long does it take a Hasselts Goby to start showing itself in a new tank?
Many keepers report an “out of sight, then suddenly visible” pattern at first. Once it picks a favorite crevice, it usually starts appearing more consistently—often around feeding time.
Will it eat prepared foods like pellets, or does it need live food?
Hobbyists commonly get them onto frozen foods and small sinking pellets. The most consistent results come from offering small items that reach the bottom.
Is it normal for this goby to stay on the bottom and ignore open swimming space?
Yes—this species is typically observed perching and making short moves between rock ledges and the sand line. That bottom-focused routine is a big part of what makes it interesting to watch.
Can you keep more than one Hasselts Goby together?
Some aquarists keep multiple small, cryptic gobies successfully when there are plenty of separate crevices and “home base” spots. Introducing them with lots of rockwork structure tends to spread them out naturally.
How do you make sure it gets food if faster fish rush the surface?
Feed a mix of fine meaty foods and include at least one sinking option, then place a portion near the rockwork with the pumps running. This turns feeding into a predictable “bottom zone” routine the goby learns quickly.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
