The Japanese Swallowtail Angelfish (Genicanthus melanospilos), also called the Blackspot/Spotbreast Angelfish, is a reef-associated angelfish from the Indo‑West Pacific. Males and females show different coloration, and adults develop a narrow, forked “swallowtail” tail shape with trailing filaments.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady, active cruising through open water, with regular passes along the reef face and rockwork edges
- Quick “water-column” feeding responses when small foods are broadcast into the flow
- Clear interest in other fish during introductions, followed by a predictable daily swim route once settled
- If kept as a small group, a consistent social hierarchy where one fish becomes the dominant individual
Provide a large aquarium with open swimming lanes and stable reef parameters, plus rockwork contours the fish can pass in and out of as it makes loops around the tank. Offer small, frequent feedings (around 3 times daily) using finely chopped meaty foods, mysis, and quality prepared foods that stay suspended in the water column. For multi-Genicanthus setups, keep only one male and use an acclimation box for a few days so introductions stay smooth.
Will a female Japanese Swallowtail Angelfish turn into a male in a home aquarium?
Yes—Genicanthus angels are protogynous (female-first), and hobbyists commonly see a dominant individual transition over several weeks to months when housed with other females.
Can I keep more than one swallowtail angelfish together?
Keep a single male per tank; larger systems can house multiple females, and many aquarists have best results when additions are planned and introduced carefully.
Why does my swallowtail sometimes chase smaller open-water fish?
Keepers often describe short “move along” chases toward smaller, similarly active fish (like anthias-type swimmers), especially around feeding time and during early settling-in.
Does it stay in open water all day, or will it use caves and overhangs too?
Most of the day is spent cruising midwater, but many individuals weave along the reef structure and tuck in near ledges to pause and reset between laps.
What’s a reliable way to get it eating pellets consistently?
Many hobbyists mix pellets into the same feeding window as frozen foods, letting the fish sample floating items in the current; repeating this with smaller, more frequent feedings builds consistency.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
