The Lamarck Angelfish (Genicanthus lamarck) is a reef safe angelfish known for a clean silver-gray body with thin black striping and a freckled lyretail shape. It’s often listed as a swallowtail/lyretail angelfish and stays active in open water while still using rockwork as a reference point.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady mid-water cruising, with smooth turns along the reef face and open swim lanes
- Quick “snap and glide” feeding in the water column once it learns your tank’s routine
- Regular laps that become more confident and consistent over the first couple of weeks
- In a pair, loosely synchronized swimming and clear “lead fish” behavior during feeding
To succeed with this species, provide open swimming room plus structured rockwork it can circle and pass through. Offer a varied mix of meaty frozen foods and quality prepared foods, split into 2–3 smaller feedings for best consistency. Many hobbyists also use a tight-fitting screen top on open-top systems.
How do you tell a male from a female Lamarck Angelfish?
Females usually show a broader stripe pattern that continues into the tail area, while males tend to develop longer tail streamers as they mature; the yellow forehead spot can show up in larger fish and isn’t a standalone sexing method.
Can a female Lamarck Angelfish transition to male over time?
Keepers commonly report a dominant fish taking on more “male” traits when housed without an established male, especially in small groups or when a male is removed.
Do Lamarck Angelfish jump?
They’re not considered one of the highest-risk jumpers, but hobbyists still report occasional jumping—most success stories with uncovered tanks come down to individual behavior and tank layout.
Is it better to add a single Lamarck, or try a pair?
Pairs are commonly kept, and people have good results adding two fish together (or introducing a smaller fish to an established larger one) so they sort out roles early with less back-and-forth later.
Why does a Lamarck sometimes chase wrasses or other mid-water fish?
Short chases are often tied to “cruising lanes” and feeding-time excitement; spreading food across the tank and keeping multiple swim paths tends to reduce repeated targeting.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
