The Lunare Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare), often called the Moon Wrasse, is a fast-moving Indo-Pacific wrasse with a green-to-blue body, magenta facial markings, and a yellow crescent in the tail as it matures. It spends the day weaving through rockwork and open water, adding constant motion to larger reef and fish-only displays.
What You’ll Observe:
- Repeated “patrol loops” along the front glass and around the rockwork
- Quick, precise darting as it investigates crevices and ledges
- A strong routine around feeding time—often first to notice food
- Nighttime settling into rock nooks and sheltered overhangs
Provide a spacious, established aquarium with sturdy rockwork and clear open lanes for swimming. Offer a variety of meaty frozen foods plus quality pellets to keep feeding response consistent, and maintain a tight-fitting lid since active wrasses can launch upward during sudden movement.
Is it normal for the Lunare Wrasse’s colors to shift over time?
Yes—many keepers notice stronger blues/greens and more defined facial patterning as the fish matures, and coloration can vary with mood and lighting.
Does it “sleep in the sand” like some other wrasses?
Most often it wedges into a protected rock crevice or under an overhang at night, so providing multiple sheltered resting spots helps it settle in.
Why does it sometimes move frags or rearrange small items?
As it investigates and hunts around the aquascape, it may mouth and tug at loose pieces; securing frags to plugs or rock reduces shifting.
Will it accept pellets and prepared foods long-term?
In many tanks it learns the feeding routine quickly and will take pellets/flake alongside frozen foods once it recognizes them as food.
Can it be kept with other wrasses if added together?
It often does best as the only “large, always-cruising” wrasse in the display; when mixing wrasses, adding ample swim space and clear sight breaks helps interactions stay calmer.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
