The Magnificent Foxface is commonly kept as an algae grazer that spends the day picking across live rock and working into cracks with its longer snout. Its pattern is a white body with a dark saddle and a facial stripe, with yellow edging on the fins and a thin red margin along the dorsal fin.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady cruising in open water, then repeated “loops” back to the rockwork to graze
- Quick, precise pecks at film algae on rock and glass, plus focused grazing sessions on offered seaweed
- A routine of choosing a consistent resting spot as lights dim, then resuming normal coloration and activity after lights come on
- Calm, deliberate interactions with most tankmates, and more attention toward similar-shaped grazers near its favorite feeding areas
Provide open swimming room plus mature live rock so it can graze throughout the day, and offer regular sheets of nori/seaweed along with varied prepared foods. Most keepers have the best long-term results when it’s kept singly (or as an established pair in a very large system), with plenty of room to settle into a daily feeding route.
Why did my Magnificent Foxface turn blotchy or darker than usual?
Many foxfaces shift pattern and intensity with lighting changes and while resting; the normal pattern typically returns once it’s active again.
Is it normal for a foxface to “sleep on its side” or rest in an odd position?
Yes—many hobbyists report foxfaces resting tilted or even fully on their side at night, then righting themselves when the lights come on.
My foxface ignores the nori clip—how do I get it to recognize seaweed as food?
Try placing a small sheet in a familiar location (or sandwiching it against the glass with a magnet) and keep it consistent for a week or two so it learns the new feeding spot.
Will it still be useful once the tank looks “clean” of algae?
Often yes—keepers commonly use foxfaces to prevent regrowth by continuing scheduled seaweed feedings and letting the fish graze naturally between meals.
Can I keep two rabbitfish/foxfaces together?
It sometimes works as a bonded pair, but many hobbyists have the smoothest experience keeping a single rabbitfish unless the aquarium is very large and the fish are introduced carefully.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
