The Majestic Angelfish (Pomacanthus navarchus), also called the Blue Girdled or Navarchus Angel, is a large Indo-Pacific angelfish with a deep-blue face band edged in light blue and a yellow, blue-trimmed body. Juveniles show curved pale stripes, then shift into the adult pattern as they grow.
What You’ll Observe:
- Methodical cruising through rockwork, pausing often to graze and inspect surfaces
- A consistent daily route, returning to favorite caves and swim-throughs
- Confident feeding once settled, with repeated passes over clip-fed algae and sponge-based foods
- Short territorial displays near its chosen area, followed by calm grazing
Provide plenty of mature live rock, arches, and shaded retreats so it can browse naturally and feel secure. Offer a varied mix of frozen meaty foods, quality angelfish preparations that include sponge, and marine algae in smaller portions a few times per day. With steady routines and ample space, it becomes a bold centerpiece fish.
How quickly do Majestic Angelfish change from juvenile to adult coloration?
Many begin showing adult yellow and the blue girdle when still small, and the change can progress noticeably over a few months.
Why does a Majestic Angelfish peck at rock and glass so often?
This is normal grazing behavior as it searches for natural foods and biofilm on hard surfaces.
What foods usually get a new Majestic Angelfish eating?
Starting with highly scented options like mysis, clam on the half shell, and sponge-based blends often helps, then you can broaden the menu.
Can they be trained onto pellets?
Yes—many learn by mixing pellets with frozen foods or offering softened pellets where the fish already grazes.
Is it normal for one to disappear into the rockwork for stretches?
Yes—new arrivals often pick a specific cave to retreat to, then expand their swimming range as they learn the tank’s routine.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
