The Map Puffer (Arothron mappa) is also sold as the Scribbled Pufferfish, with a tan-to-yellow base color covered in a maze-like network of dark “scribbles.” This large Arothron puffer is an interactive, day-active fish commonly kept in fish-only systems where its pattern and personality become the main focal point.
What You’ll Observe:
- Slow, deliberate cruising through open water, then hovering near rockwork and overhangs
- Frequent “inspection” behavior—stopping to look closely at rocks, pumps, and feeding tools
- A strong routine around feeding time, often meeting you at the front glass
- A favorite cave or shaded spot that it returns to between laps around the tank
Provide a very large aquarium with sturdy rockwork, open swimming room, and a roomy overhang or cave for breaks between activity. Offer a varied meaty menu (shrimp, squid, clam, krill), and include hard-shelled foods regularly so the beak stays naturally worn down. Use a container (not a net) for transfers so it stays calm and controlled.
How do I keep a Map Puffer’s beak worn down over time?
Rotate in hard-shelled items (like clam on the half shell or shell-on shrimp) alongside softer frozen foods so normal feeding helps maintain the beak.
My new Map Puffer is hiding and ignoring food—what’s a normal acclimation pattern?
Many settle in by staying near a cave or resting spot at first, then begin taking food more reliably once they recognize the feeding routine and feel established.
Will it learn to recognize people and take food from your hand or tongs?
Hobbyists commonly report Arothron puffers quickly associate people with feeding and will follow you at the glass; a feeding stick/tongs helps keep interactions consistent.
Can a Map Puffer live with other large fish (like triggers, angels, or eels)?
Keepers often mix them with other robust fish in large systems, especially when there’s plenty of space and a clear feeding plan so tankmates aren’t competing in the same corner.
Why does a Map Puffer sometimes act buoyant after a meal?
Some keepers describe temporary buoyancy or “air/gas” episodes after certain foods; switching back to smaller portions and familiar foods is often used as a practical first step while it settles.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
