The Map Puffer (Arothron mappa) is also sold as the Scribbled Pufferfish, with a tan-to-yellow base color covered in a maze-like network of dark “scribbles.” This large Arothron puffer is an interactive, day-active fish commonly kept in fish-only systems where its pattern and personality become the main focal point.

What You’ll Observe:

• Slow, deliberate cruising through open water, then hovering near rockwork and overhangs
• Frequent “inspection” behavior—stopping to look closely at rocks, pumps, and feeding tools
• A strong routine around feeding time, often meeting you at the front glass
• A favorite cave or shaded spot that it returns to between laps around the tank

Provide a very large aquarium with sturdy rockwork, open swimming room, and a roomy overhang or cave for breaks between activity. Offer a varied meaty menu (shrimp, squid, clam, krill), and include hard-shelled foods regularly so the beak stays naturally worn down. Use a container (not a net) for transfers so it stays calm and controlled.
