The Mauritius Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus piscilineatus) is a small, open-water wrasse known for quick “flashing” displays where the fish dashes and fully flares its fins. Males show the strongest patterning and fin extension, and they tend to use open swimming lanes above the rockwork for display runs.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, fast laps through the middle of the tank, followed by tight turns back toward the rockwork
- Brief fin-flares and display “bursts,” especially when other wrasses are nearby
- A steady routine of hovering and cruising that becomes more consistent after the first week
- Quick, confident feeding from the water column when small foods are offered
To do well, provide an established reef with plenty of rock structure plus open space to swim, and offer small meaty foods 2–3 times daily so it can feed in short bursts. This species fits best in a calm community where it can display naturally during the day. A snug lid helps keep its activity focused in the tank.
Will it “flash” even if I only keep one?
Many individuals still display, but you’ll usually see the biggest fin-flares during brief social moments (other wrasses nearby, mirror-like reflections, or activity at feeding time).
Do I need to keep a male and females for natural behavior?
A single fish can do great, but groups often bring out more frequent display runs; most keepers aim for one male with females rather than multiple males.
Is it normal for color to look muted at first?
Yes—many wrasses show their best contrast once they’ve settled into the tank’s lighting schedule and daily routine.
Can I mix this with other flasher or fairy wrasses?
Often yes in larger systems; hobbyists usually get the smoothest introductions by adding the most assertive wrasse last and giving everyone clear swim lanes.
Does it need sand to sleep?
Most flashers wedge into rock crevices to rest; a sand bed can be beneficial for overall reef function, but it’s not typically required just for sleeping behavior.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
