The Melanarus Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus), also called the Tail Spot Wrasse or Hoeven’s Wrasse, is an active reef-safe wrasse that spends the day cruising rockwork and sand. It is commonly chosen for pest control because it preys on fireworms and pyramidellid snails and may also pick at some flatworms.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, repeated patrols along the rock and sand, pausing to inspect crevices
- A quick dive into the sand to rest when lights go out, and a similar dive when startled
- Confident feeding responses at the front glass once it learns your schedule
- Noticeable color flashing during interactions, especially around other wrasses
Provide a tight-fitting lid and a 2–3 inch sandy area so it can bury comfortably at night. Offer vitamin-enriched frozen mysis or brine plus a quality pellet or flake in regular small feedings, and keep plenty of open rockwork for foraging lanes.
How long does it take to see a new Melanarus Wrasse out in the open regularly?
Many keepers find it follows a “disappear then reappear” pattern at first, then becomes more predictable once it learns the tank’s light and feeding schedule.
Can it share a tank with other wrasses, or is it better as the only wrasse?
It’s often kept as a single Halichoeres wrasse, but it can work with other wrasses when there’s enough rockwork and clear “routes” so fish aren’t constantly crossing paths.
Will it go after snails, hermits, or small crabs even if it leaves corals alone?
Some individuals ignore clean-up-crew animals, while others show interest in small mobile inverts over time; most hobbyists plan their clean-up crew around that possibility.
Do I need fine sand, or will coarse sand work for its normal sleeping behavior?
A sand bed that’s easy to move and settle into tends to work best; many keepers prefer finer grains so the fish can bury quickly and fully.
Why does it sometimes show brighter colors and quick flashing movements?
This is commonly reported during social moments (new tankmates, feeding time, or seeing its reflection) and is part of how many wrasses communicate and posture.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
