The Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas) is a combtooth blenny often seen in golden-yellow to orange tones with a bright blue eye, and it tends to spend more time in the open water than many “perching” blennies. It can also shift coloration to blend in with the fish it mixes with, which makes its look change over time.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering and cruising in the water column, then quickly returning to a favorite rock crevice
- An “eel-like” swimming style as it weaves through rockwork and open lanes
- Meeting you at the front glass at feeding time and staying active during meals
- Picking a consistent “home hole,” while still making regular loops around the tank
To help your Midas Blenny settle in, provide rockwork with multiple tight caves plus a clear midwater lane for swimming. Offer a mix of quality pellets and small frozen foods (like mysis/brine/calanus) in a couple of small feedings each day so it can eat comfortably in the flow.
Why did my Midas Blenny turn darker or change patterns?
Color shifts are a normal behavior for this species, and many keepers notice it change quickly based on surroundings and the fish it’s mixing with.
Does a Midas Blenny act like other blennies that sit on the rocks all day?
It often behaves more like a midwater swimmer that uses one crevice as a “base,” so you may see it out in the open more than you’d expect from a blenny.
My Midas Blenny eats one bite and then loses interest’what usually helps?
Many hobbyists have better consistency with smaller portions offered more than once a day, using a mix of pellet and frozen options so it can take repeated bites without rushing.
Can I keep a Midas Blenny with another blenny species?
Some aquarists report extra posturing between blennies, so the smoothest setups usually give each fish its own rock “zone” with separate perches and caves to claim.
Is it normal for a Midas Blenny to disappear into a hole for a while?
Yes’some keepers see periods where it stays in one crevice for days, then returns to its usual feeding-and-swimming routine.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
