The Mono Fish (Mono Argentus / Silver Moony / Fingerfish) is a deep-bodied, diamond-shaped swimmer with a bright silver sheen and subtle yellow edging in the fins. Juveniles often show darker vertical banding that softens with age, giving the fish a cleaner “silver moony” look as it matures.
What You’ll Observe:
- Active, open-water swimming, often cruising mid-to-upper areas of the tank
- More natural schooling behavior when kept with other Monos
- Quick, coordinated movement when food hits the water
- Juvenile striping gradually becoming less pronounced as the fish grows
To do well long-term, provide a large aquarium with open swimming room plus some rockwork edges the group can loop around. Offer a mixed menu (seaweed/spirulina-based foods plus meaty items like brine or mysis) spread across the tank so multiple fish can feed at once. Maintain stable marine conditions, and you’ll see steadier activity and stronger coloration.
Do the black bars fade as the fish grows?
Yes—many Monos show stronger banding as juveniles, and the pattern often becomes lighter and less defined with maturity.
Will they snack on decorative macroalgae?
Some will pick at softer fronds; choosing tougher macros and keeping regular feedings tends to reduce grazing on display pieces.
Why do they sometimes “pace” the glass after being added?
It’s commonly a settling-in behavior in active schooling fish; consistent lighting and routine feeding usually smooths this out.
Are they okay with slow, long-finned tankmates?
They’re fast at feeding time and can be fin-curious, so similarly active tankmates typically create a calmer day-to-day dynamic.
What’s a simple trick to reduce feeding-time chaos in a group?
Feed in two spots (or use a mix of floating + sinking foods) so the school naturally splits up and everyone gets a share.
