The Niger Trigger (Odonus niger) is a large, open-water triggerfish known for deep blue to blue-green body tones that can shift with lighting, plus long tail streamers as it matures. Adults develop the red “teeth” that give the Redtooth Trigger its common nickname.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady cruising in the open, with frequent loops past the front glass when you approach
- Quick, decisive feeding strikes, often followed by patrolling for leftovers in the rockwork
- Regular use of caves and ledges as “parking spots,” especially when the lights change
- Occasional “redecorating,” moving small pieces or nudging rockwork while exploring
For best results, provide a spacious 180-gallon (or larger) aquarium with stable rockwork and multiple caves so it can choose a resting spot. Offer a varied menu of meaty marine foods (and include some harder items in the rotation) to keep feeding consistent as it grows.
Why does my Niger Trigger spit water at the surface or at the glass?
Many learn to do this around feeding time as a repeatable way to get your attention, especially when they recognize your approach.
Will it hide a lot right after introduction?
It’s common for them to spend extra time in a chosen cave at first, then become more visible as they learn your lighting and feeding routine.
Will it eat nori or algae sheets?
Some will pick at nori when it’s offered on a clip or grazer; it’s a simple way to add variety alongside meaty foods.
How do I keep it from grabbing all the food first?
Feeding smaller portions in a couple of spots (or using a clip for slower foods) helps spread the action out without changing your overall routine.
Does it ever “pose” for cleaner shrimp or tankmates?
Keepers often report individuals that pause and allow brief cleaning behavior once they’re settled and comfortable.
We source from vetted suppliers known for healthy, long-lived specimens.
