The Orange Spotted Filefish (Oxymonacanthus longirostris), also called the Harlequin or Longnose Filefish, has a slim turquoise-green body covered in orange spots and a long pointed snout for precise picking. In nature it closely associates with branching Acropora and feeds by taking small bites of coral polyps throughout the day.
What You’ll Observe:
- Slow, deliberate cruising through rockwork and branching structures, with frequent short “pecking” stops
- Pair-style behavior is common, with two fish often traveling side-by-side
- A strong interest in grazing-style feeding, returning to the same areas repeatedly
To succeed, provide a mature, stable aquarium with calm tankmates and plenty of branching structure for natural foraging. Offer very small foods multiple times daily, and many keepers get the best response by pressing sticky foods onto a rough surface (like rock or coral skeleton) so the fish can pick at it naturally.
Do these filefish do better alone or in pairs?
Both can work; many hobbyists enjoy their pair-style behavior when two are compatible and have enough space to settle into a routine.
How can I present prepared foods so it “clicks” faster?
A common approach is to press sticky food onto a hard surface so it can be picked at like natural grazing, instead of drifting away in the water column.
Is constant pecking and “sampling” normal behavior?
Yes—this species naturally feeds in many small bites, so frequent picking is a typical day-to-day activity pattern.
Do they ever accept foods like frozen items or Masstick long-term?
Some individuals do, and keepers commonly report success when the food is offered in a way that matches their picking/foraging style.
Where do they usually rest at night?
Keepers often observe them settling into branching structure and staying very still until the lights come back on.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
