The Orange Stripe Cardinal (Ostorhinchus properuptus) is a small cardinalfish with a silvery body and orange linear striping that’s often grouped in the trade with “orange-lined/yellowstriped” Ostorhinchus cardinals.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering under ledges and in shaded rockwork through the day, then becoming noticeably more active around dusk and low-light periods
- Short, deliberate feeding “bursts” into the water column when food drifts by, then returning to cover
- Loose grouping behavior when kept with others, with each fish favoring its own preferred nook in the aquascape
- Occasional “pairing off” and close-following behavior between two individuals, especially as they settle in
To help this cardinal settle in quickly, provide shaded retreats (overhangs, caves, and branching-style rockwork) so it can choose a consistent daytime shelter. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, finely chopped seafood blends, and other plankton-sized frozen options) and you’ll typically see the strongest feeding response in lower light. If keeping multiple, add them together and spread shelters across the rockwork so the group can sort itself out calmly.
Why do Orange Stripe Cardinals disappear during the day and “show up” at night?
Many Ostorhinchus cardinals naturally shelter in shaded structure by day and do more of their foraging in lower light, so a dusk-heavy activity pattern is normal.
Will a small group actually school in a home aquarium?
Keepers commonly report more “pack-like” grouping when they first settle in, and looser spacing later—often with the fish staying within the same general zone of the rockwork.
How can I encourage consistent feeding once it’s in the display?
Using smaller particle foods and feeding when the tank is calmer (early morning or as lights ramp down) often matches how they prefer to hunt and makes feeding responses more reliable.
Do they use specific “host” structures like urchin spines or branching corals?
Hobbyists frequently observe these cardinals choosing tight, branched cover (including longspine-urchin-style structure) as a preferred shelter shape.
Can they become territorial even though they’re considered peaceful?
Yes—many keepers describe them as more “space-defensive” than aggressive, especially around a favored overhang or cave, which is usually solved by providing multiple comparable hiding spots.
