The Orbiculate Batfish (Platax orbicularis) is a tall, disk-shaped batfish that transitions from a mottled juvenile into a silvery adult with distinct dark bars. It’s an Indo-Pacific show fish that uses open water and becomes a noticeable “centerpiece” as it grows.
What You’ll Observe:
- Slow, steady cruising in open areas with wide turns
- Frequent “hovering” near the front glass during activity nearby
- A clear shift in look as it grows from juvenile to adult patterning
- After a few weeks, many settle in and begin following you at feeding time
Provide a deep aquarium with unobstructed swimming room and a consistent feeding routine. Offer a varied mix of meaty frozen foods plus herbivore-style preparations, split into multiple smaller feedings each day. With stable parameters and calm tank flow, this batfish becomes a predictable, interactive presence in your display.
How fast does the juvenile look change as it grows?
Most show noticeable pattern and body-shape changes over months as they size up.
Will this batfish recognize people or follow my hands?
Many keepers report they become very interactive, especially at feeding time.
Why does my batfish “tilt” or angle its body while swimming?
A slight angled posture is commonly seen and can be part of normal cruising.
Can I keep more than one Orbiculate Batfish together?
In very large systems, pairs or small groups are often kept when added together.
What’s the easiest way to move a batfish without damaging fins?
Many hobbyists use a submerged container or bag instead of a net.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
