The Pink and Blue Shrimpgoby (Cryptocentrus leptocephalus) is a watchman/shrimp goby that sets up a home base on the sandbed, lightly sifting and moving sand as it maintains a burrow area. It typically shows a pale yellow to greenish body with subtle banding and pink-to-reddish spotting across the head, body, and fins. This species is well-known for the shrimp goby/pistol shrimp pairing behavior, where it shares a burrow while acting as a lookout.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a specific “front porch” spot near its burrow and returning there throughout the day
- Perching at the entrance, then quickly retreating when something passes close by
- Taking meaty frozen foods readily once settled, especially when food is delivered near its spot
- Short sand-moving sessions around the burrow (more localized than true sand-sifting gobies)
Provide a sandy substrate with a few small rubble pieces near stable rockwork so it can establish a burrow zone. Offer small meaty foods at least twice daily, and deliver some portions near its chosen area so it can feed without racing the whole tank. A tight-fitting lid helps keep your goby secure as it explores the bottom and rock edges.
Will it pair with any pistol shrimp, or does it need a specific one?
Most keepers aim for Alpheus pistol shrimp species, and pairing success is best when both are added with appropriate sand/rubble so they can choose a shared burrow.
Why does it “make faces” or posture at other fish?
It’s common for watchman gobies to do short defensive displays around their home spot; it’s usually brief and more about holding a boundary than chasing fish around the tank.
Will it constantly sift the whole sandbed like a Diamond Goby?
No—this species tends to move and sift sand mainly near its burrow area rather than covering the entire tank.
Is it safe with cleaner shrimp and small ornamental shrimp?
Many reef tanks keep them successfully, but small shrimp can be at risk—especially if the goby decides they fit in its mouth.
Does it disappear for long periods after introduction?
It can spend extra time in its burrow at first; consistent feeding near its home spot and a calm, predictable routine usually brings it out more often.
