The Pudding Wife Wrasse (Halichoeres radiatus) is a sand-burying Halichoeres wrasse from the western Atlantic, often seen cruising along rock and sand while it searches the bottom for small foods. In a large reef aquarium it adds steady motion near the substrate and settles into a predictable day/night routine once established.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrols the lower half of the tank, weaving between rockwork and open sand
- Dives into the sand to rest at night, and may stay buried for its first few days
- Becomes more visible on a regular light schedule, often appearing at the same times daily
To succeed, provide open sand plus stable rockwork, along with a fine sand bed deep enough for nightly burrowing. Offer a variety of meaty frozen foods and quality pellets in small portions so it can feed throughout the day.
Why did it disappear into the sand right after going into my tank?
This is normal sand-sleeper behavior, especially during the first few days; it typically reappears on its own as it gets comfortable.
Can I quarantine this wrasse without a full sand bed?
Many hobbyists use a small container/dish of fine sand in quarantine so the fish can bury at night and settle in faster.
Is it normal for it to keep its own schedule and go to bed early?
Yes—some Halichoeres-type wrasses bury themselves hours before lights-out at first, then gradually sync up with the tank’s routine.
Will it kick sand onto frags or corals when it buries itself?
It can toss sand when diving in; leaving a clear sand landing zone helps keep nearby frags cleaner.
Will it take prepared foods quickly once it starts coming out?
Most transition well—starting with small meaty frozen options and feeding when it’s already out often speeds up the switch to pellets.
