The Raccoon Butterfly (Chaetodon lunula) is an Indo-Pacific butterflyfish with a crescent “mask” over the face and angled orange striping across the body. In fish-only and FOWLR setups, it’s commonly chosen for its natural interest in nuisance anemones like Aiptasia.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady, continuous cruising across open water and along rock faces
- Frequent “pecking” at rockwork, seams, and small crevices while it forages
- A quick shift into a predictable routine, often meeting you at the glass at feeding time
- Nighttime resting in a favorite cave or under a ledge once the lights go down
Provide plenty of swimming room with rockwork arranged into ledges and caves. Offer a varied menu of meaty frozen foods plus some algae-based options, split into multiple small feedings through the day. With calm tankmates and a consistent feeding schedule, it settles in and stays active.
Will it keep hunting once the Aiptasia are gone?
Many keepers report it continues to forage and “inspect” the rockwork; keeping a varied feeding rotation helps keep that behavior focused on natural grazing.
Is it normal for it to peck at the same spots over and over?
Yes—this is typical butterflyfish foraging, and it often revisits the same rocks, corners, and seams throughout the day.
Can I keep two Raccoon Butterflies together?
Hobbyists most often have success with a confirmed pair in a larger aquarium, or by adding two specimens at the same time so neither establishes the whole tank first.
Will it bother my display anemone (like a clownfish host)?
Keepers frequently discuss these butterflies showing strong interest in stinging anemones, so plan your livestock mix around that behavior.
Should I pick a smaller or larger specimen?
A commonly repeated tip is to choose a specimen that’s already feeding strongly at the store, with many hobbyists favoring “middle” sizes that transition to prepared foods reliably.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
