The Rainbow Basslet (Liopropoma fasciatum) is a deepwater Liopropoma known for a purple-to-magenta body with bold yellow banding and striping that reads clearly even in shaded rockwork. Native to the tropical Eastern Pacific, it’s most often associated with deeper reef structure where it uses caves and crevices as a “home base,” then cruises back out to patrol the surrounding area.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picks a favorite cave or overhang and returns to it repeatedly
- Short, confident patrol loops along the rock faces and ledges
- Becomes most visible around feeding time once it learns the routine
- “Hover and watch” behavior near entrances, then quick dashes to investigate
- A noticeable sense of territory around its chosen section of rockwork
How to succeed: Provide a rockscape with multiple caves/overhangs so it can move between shaded “stations” without crossing wide-open sand. Offer a variety of meaty frozen foods and feed in a consistent spot so it learns where to meet you. For best long-term compatibility, choose tankmates that won’t constantly crowd its cave entrances and keep small ornamental crustaceans in a separate system.
Does this fish tend to “disappear” for a few days after introduction?
Many basslets spend their early days mapping the rockwork and choosing a primary shelter; once the fish recognizes the feeding routine, it’s typically seen on a predictable schedule.
Is it normal if it only shows its head from a cave most of the day?
Yes’hovering at the entrance is a common basslet pattern, especially in brighter tanks; adding shaded overhangs often encourages more “out in front” time.
Will it bother cleaner shrimp or other ornamental shrimp?
Hobbyists frequently treat larger Liopropoma as shrimp hunters once settled; if shrimp are a must-have, plan on keeping them in a different display.
Do Rainbow Basslets jump like some wrasses and dartfish?
Keepers commonly report unexpected carpet-surfing with basslet-type fish even in established tanks, so a tight lid and covered overflow gaps are worth planning for.
Can I keep it with other basslets (Swissguard/Candy/grammas)?
Mixing basslets is often most successful when there are multiple separate cave zones and line-of-sight breaks, so each fish can “own” an area without constant face-to-face encounters.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
