The Rainbow Wrasse (Thalassoma quinquevittatum), often sold as a Pinkface Wrasse or Five Stripe Wrasse, is an active hunter that can help reduce nuisance motile invertebrates like bristleworms and mantis shrimp. It’s recognized by a green-yellow body with thick pink striping near the face and constant movement through the rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Fast, confident laps through open water with frequent “check-ins” at the rockwork
- Quick darting bursts when it notices food or investigates crevices
- A consistent patrol route it repeats throughout the day
- Bold, interactive behavior once it learns your feeding routine
Provide plenty of rockwork with open swimming lanes, and offer a varied mix of meaty frozen foods plus quality pellets/flake for best consistency at feeding time. A secure lid helps keep this high-energy wrasse focused on cruising your reef instead of testing the rim.
Will its color look muted at first?
It’s common for color to look washed out during holding/shipping; as it settles into a routine and lighting, the pattern usually sharpens over the first several days.
Does it sleep in the sand or in the rocks?
Many Thalassoma wrasses rest by diving into sand or wedging into protected rock crevices, so giving both options supports natural nighttime behavior.
Can it be kept with other wrasses?
Hobbyists most often report better results when tankmates are similarly robust and there’s ample space and rockwork so each fish can establish its own “lane.”
Why does it seem to “patrol” the same path all day?
A repeating route is typical of active wrasses that continuously inspect the tank for food and movement, especially once they’re comfortable.
Will it accept prepared foods long-term?
Most keepers have the best consistency by rotating frozen meaty foods and supplementing with high-quality pellets/flake so it can grab bites throughout the day.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
