The Randalli Shrimpgoby (Orange Stripe Prawn Goby / Randall’s Shrimp Goby) is a shrimp goby with a white body marked by narrow orange striping and a taller first dorsal fin that can show an eyespot when displayed. In a reef tank it usually chooses one small “home base” on the sand near rockwork, where it can perch and watch the open water.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching at a burrow entrance and making short dashes to grab passing food
- Working a small patch of sand and rubble, then returning to the same lookout spot
- If housed with a pistol shrimp, a shared burrow where the shrimp does most of the digging
- A settling-in period where it keeps a lower profile, then becomes more visible as routines form
For best results, provide a sand bed with a few small rubble pieces near a stable rock overhang so it can establish a burrow area. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis/brine and finely chopped seafood) in small portions, and place some food near its chosen entrance during the first week. If you want the classic shrimp goby pairing, a compatible pistol shrimp can encourage more “burrow-and-guard” behavior once they settle in together.
Does this goby need a pistol shrimp to do well?
No—many settle in fine on their own, but a compatible pistol shrimp often makes the burrow behavior more active and consistent.
My goby and shrimp share a burrow but I don’t see them “working together”—is that normal?
Yes. Some pairs stay subtle and mostly coordinate at the entrance, especially once the burrow system is established.
Why did it disappear right after I added it?
It’s common for this species to pick a protected spot and stay tucked in while it maps the tank and commits to one burrow zone; targeted feeding near the entrance helps establish a routine.
Will it mostly eat prepared foods, or does it rely on the sand bed/pods?
It commonly takes prepared meaty foods, and it will also pick at small items stirred up around the burrow—feeding near its “home base” makes that transition easier.
If I add a pistol shrimp, will it move sand (or small items) around the tank?
Pistols are active diggers and often re-landscape the immediate burrow area; giving extra small rubble/shell pieces near the entrance helps concentrate that activity where you want it.
