Often sold as a “Red Scooter Blenny,” Synchiropus stellatus is a dragonet with a red-and-white mottled body pattern and dark spotting. It stays low in the tank, moving between the sand and lower rockwork as it searches for small foods.
What You’ll Observe:
- “Scooting” and short hops from rock to rock while it pecks at tiny items on the surface
- A slow, deliberate feeding style, spending extra time over one patch of sand or rock
- The male extending a taller dorsal fin during displays
- Occasional open-water drifting in gentle flow, then returning to the bottom
To do well long-term, provide an established reef with live rock and a live sandbed so it can graze naturally between meals. Offer small meaty foods that reach the bottom (such as enriched brine shrimp, bloodworms, and similar fine foods) and keep feeding time calm so it can take its time. With steady conditions and consistent feeding, it settles into a reliable daily foraging routine.
Is a “scooter blenny” actually a blenny?
In the hobby, “scooter blenny” is a common trade name, but this fish is a dragonet (genus Synchiropus), with different feeding behavior than typical algae-grazing blennies.
Do Red Scooter Dragonets jump?
Many keepers report unexpected jumps, especially during maintenance or if there’s a gap in the lid, so a tight-fitting cover is commonly used.
How fast can one wipe out copepods, and do people replenish them?
Hobbyists often note pod populations can drop quickly in smaller tanks, and many choose to periodically add pods or maintain a separate place for pods to reproduce (like a refugium or pod culture).
Can it live with a mandarin dragonet or other dragonets?
Keepers commonly report peaceful day-to-day cohabitation when there’s enough natural food and space for both fish to hunt.
Why does it sometimes look “sleepy” or different early in the day?
It’s normal for dragonets to look less alert right after lights come on, then resume bottom-foraging once the tank is fully awake.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
