The Redlip Blenny (Ophioblennius macclurei) is a rock-perching combtooth blenny that spends much of the day grazing and picking at algae films on live rock. It’s best known for its red lip coloration and bold “perch-and-dart” movement pattern, common to many reef-associated blennies from the western Atlantic.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on ledges and then making short, quick dashes between favorite spots
- Regular grazing passes over rock surfaces, especially in established systems
- A clear “home base” behavior’one crack or crevice becomes its go-to perch
- Color often deepens as it settles in and establishes a routine over the first few weeks
Provide mature rockwork with natural grazing area, plus a few caves/crevices so it can claim a perch without competing for space. Offer algae-based foods (like sheets and pellets) alongside small frozen foods to keep feeding consistent as the tank’s algae level changes. A stable, well-established reef helps this species stay active and visible.
Why did my Redlip Blenny turn darker after a few weeks?
Many keepers report the body color deepens once it feels established and starts spending more time on its preferred rockwork.
Will it actually clean algae off the glass?
It usually focuses on rocks and patches of film algae; most tanks still benefit from a dedicated clean-up crew for consistent glass cleaning.
Can it get pushy with tangs or other algae grazers?
Territory disputes are often about a specific ledge or grazing lane, so spreading out perches and grazing surfaces can make interactions look more relaxed.
Is it normal for it to “post up” in one area most of the day?
Yes’this species often chooses a main perch and works short routes from that spot rather than cruising the whole tank.
Will it eat very small fish or tiny shrimp if it can?
Some hobbyists report opportunistic feeding when tankmates are small enough to fit in its mouth, so pairing it with appropriately sized livestock keeps behavior predictable.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
