The Rippled Rockskipper Blenny (Istiblennius edentulus) is an algae-grazing blenny that spends most of its day perched on rock ledges and picking at film growth. It’s a tidepool-style “rockskipper” commonly associated with shallow Indo-Pacific reef flats, and it’s known for quick, short dashes between favorite perches.
What You’ll Observe:
- Moves in short bursts, then “posts up” on a ledge to watch the tank
- Grazes steadily across rockwork, especially in high-light areas where film algae grows
- Uses cracks and crevices as home bases, returning to the same spots throughout the day
- Shows a lot of head/fin posture while it’s perched, especially when investigating new foods
To do well long term, provide plenty of rockwork shelves, tight-fitting cover, and a tank with established natural grazing surfaces. Offer algae-based foods (like nori or herbivore blends) along with regular feeding so it stays active and engaged. It does best when it can claim a few perching zones without constant crowding from similar-shaped fish.
Why does my rockskipper blenny “disappear” for days at a time?
It’s normal for perching blennies to wedge into rock cracks and stay out of sight, then reappear once they’ve mapped out the tank and chosen a few safe resting spots.
Do rockskipper blennies climb into overflows or rear chambers?
They often explore high points and narrow gaps; covering overflow teeth and small openings helps keep their “perch hunting” limited to the display.
Is it normal for a rockskipper-type blenny to rest on rocks in odd angles?
Yes’many “rock percher” blennies settle onto ledges and lean into surfaces as a normal resting posture between short bursts of movement.
How do people get them to recognize prepared foods?
Many hobbyists start with clipped nori or algae sheets near the blenny’s favorite perch, then add small portions of frozen foods at the same time each day until it joins in reliably.
Can I keep two together if I add them at the same time?
Most keepers have the easiest time with a single specimen unless they’ve confirmed a compatible pair, since they tend to focus on the same prime perching zones.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
