The Royal Pencil Wrasse (Pseudojuloides severnsi) is a slender, fast-moving reef wrasse known for bright multi-color striping and an “elongate pencil” body shape. In established reef tanks, it spends the day weaving through open water lanes and along rock faces while staying close to the structure.
What You’ll Observe:
- Quick, darting swims between rockwork and open areas, especially when the tank is active
- A consistent “patrol route” that repeats through the same lanes and edges of the reefscape
- Short, focused bursts of foraging along the rock where tiny foods collect
- Evening routines where it settles down early and disappears into a preferred sleeping spot
Provide a mature aquarium with fine sand for nightly burying behavior, plus open swimming room and plenty of rockwork edges to cruise. Offer small meaty foods in multiple feedings so it can graze naturally throughout the day. A secure lid helps this active wrasse settle in and stay on a steady daily schedule.
How long will it stay buried after being added?
It’s common for a new pencil wrasse to stay out of sight for several days while it learns the tank’s rhythm, then begin showing up at predictable times.
Does it really need sand if my tank is mostly rock?
Yes—most keepers have the best results when there’s a fine-sand area available, since burying is part of its normal sleep and “reset” routine.
Will it jump even if it seems calm?
Many wrasses can launch when startled (lights, reflections, quick movement). A tight-fitting lid or mesh top keeps day-one surprises from becoming losses.
Will it take frozen and pellets, or only live foods?
Many transition onto frozen and sometimes pellets, especially once they recognize feeding cues—small portions offered more than once per day usually helps.
Can it be kept with other wrasses long-term?
It typically does best with other peaceful species and clear space to cruise; in mixed-wrasse tanks, stable “pecking order” and enough room makes day-to-day behavior much more predictable.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
