The Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma velifer) is an active algae grazer that spends the day cruising rockwork and open water, picking at film algae and other growth. Adults develop tall dorsal and anal fins that “sail” outward, giving the fish a larger, disc-like profile typical of a Pacific Sailfin Tang.
What You’ll Observe:
- Long looping swim paths that repeat around the tank as it establishes a daily route
- Frequent grazing stops on rock faces, overflow walls, and back glass
- Fin “sailing” displays during feeding time and when moving through brighter areas
- Quick bursts to a favorite ledge or cave, followed by more steady cruising
To help your Sailfin Tang settle in, provide open swimming lanes with plenty of mature live rock to browse, and offer dried seaweed on a clip along with herbivore-focused frozen foods. Spreading food across more than one spot helps keep feeding time smooth and keeps the fish focused on grazing and exploring.
Why won’t my Sailfin Tang eat nori right away?
Many start by grazing rock and glass first; try folding nori into smaller pieces, placing it near its usual swim path, and offering it at the same times each day.
What does it mean when it “sails” its fins at another fish?
This is a common display where it makes itself look larger; it often fades once the fish learns the tank’s routines and feeding locations.
Is it normal for a Sailfin Tang to wedge into rockwork to sleep?
Yes—many pick a consistent sleeping spot and may look paler or “pattern-shifted” when resting, then return to normal coloration after lights come on.
How do I reduce competition at the algae clip with other grazers?
Use two clips spaced apart or split sheets into multiple smaller offerings so fish can graze without crowding one spot.
Can I add this tang to a tank that already has another tang?
Keepers often have better results by rearranging a small section of rockwork, adding the newcomer when lights are dim, and using a temporary mirror to redirect attention during the first days.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
