The Scarlet Pin Stripe Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus evanidus), also called the striated or disappearing wrasse, spends its day picking through rockwork for small invertebrates—many hobbyists choose it for natural pest control of flatworms, bristleworms, and pyramidellid snails. Its red body with fine light pinstripes is most often seen weaving in and out of caves and crevices while it searches the reef for bite-sized food.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, quick loops through the rockwork with frequent stops to inspect rubble and coral bases
- A “patrol route” that becomes more consistent as it learns your tank’s feeding schedule
- Fast, precise strikes at tiny prey items on the rocks between regular meals
- A preference for tight swim-throughs and caves where it can move smoothly from cover to open water
Provide an aquascape with multiple caves and narrow gaps so it can forage all day without needing long open-water runs. Offer a variety of small meaty foods (like mysis, brine, and finely chopped seafood) in a few small portions so it can grab bites between more outgoing tankmates.
Why is my Scarlet Pin Stripe Wrasse “missing” right after I add it?
It’s common for new wrasses to stay deep in the rockwork at first and then expand their routes over several days as they settle in.
Does this wrasse need sand to sleep?
Most Pseudocheilinus wrasses rest in rock crevices rather than burying in sand; the key is having tight, secure rockwork gaps to wedge into.
Will it bother cleaner shrimp or small ornamental shrimp?
Many aquariums keep it with larger cleaner shrimp without issues once the shrimp are established, but very small shrimp can be treated as food in some setups.
Can I keep it with other wrasses (like a yellow coris wrasse)?
This often goes best when the wrasses use different parts of the tank and the aquascape has multiple separate “routes” and hiding areas, so they aren’t forced into the same lanes.
Will it wipe out my copepods or other microfauna?
It will hunt tiny crustaceans it finds in the rockwork, but regular feeding (and a refugium, if you run one) usually keeps a steady supply in the system.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
