Scooter Blennies (Synchiropus ocellatus) are constant micro-hunters that can contribute to natural flatworm control by picking across rockwork and the sandbed. Their tan, white, and red mottling blends into live rock, and males can raise a tall first dorsal fin during displays.
What You’ll Observe:
- “Scooting” along the bottom in short glides and hops as it searches for tiny prey
- Frequent perching on ledges and coral bases while it methodically picks at surfaces
- Feeding focused near the substrate, with interest in foods that settle onto sand and rock
- Occasional dorsal-fin displays and brief rises in the water column near dusk
Provide a mature reef with live rock and a live sand bed so it can graze between meals. Offer small meaty foods that reach the bottom (finely chopped seafood, enriched brine, mysis, cyclops) in a few small feedings each day, and pause flow briefly so food can settle. Keep mealtimes calm and include plenty of perches and crevices so it can forage naturally.
How can I tell if my Scooter Blenny is eating enough?
A well-fed scooter keeps a gently rounded belly and stays busy picking at rock and sand throughout the day. Tracking body shape from above over a couple of weeks is more useful than judging a single feeding.
Do Scooter Blennies learn to eat frozen food or pellets?
Many do, especially when foods are small and allowed to sink. Target-feeding to the same bottom area with pumps off for a few minutes helps it find food consistently.
Will it wipe out my copepods?
It will hunt pods continuously, so pod numbers often drop in the display. A refugium or periodic pod additions can help keep a steady supply, even when it also takes prepared foods.
Can I keep one with a mandarin or another dragonet?
They can be kept together in very large pod-rich systems, but they share similar foraging space. Spreading food to multiple areas helps each fish find enough without crowding the same spot.
Is it normal for a scooter to perch, “hop,” or bury itself at night?
Yes—this species often rests on its fins and moves in short scoots rather than open-water swimming. Some individuals settle into the sand or wedge into rockwork after lights out.
