The Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas) is a constant algae grazer that helps manage film and hair algae as it moves across rockwork. Often called a brown tang or two-tone sailfin tang, it shows tan-to-brown body color with fine blue speckling and yellow accents that can look different under changing light.
What You’ll Observe:
- Repeated grazing passes over live rock, then short laps through open water
- Quick turns and “sailfin” posture changes as it navigates around the aquascape
- Regular visits to a veggie clip once it learns the feeding spot
- Noticeable color shifts from morning to evening, especially around lights-out
Provide mature rockwork for natural picking and leave clear swimming lanes along the front and sides of the tank. Offer dried seaweed on a clip several times per week, backed up with herbivore pellets/flakes and occasional frozen foods for variety. With a steady routine, it settles into a predictable daily loop of grazing and cruising.
Do Scopas Tangs change color at night?
Many keepers notice they lighten significantly or show a different pattern when the lights dim, then return to their daytime look once the photoperiod starts.
How long does it take a new Scopas Tang to start cruising the tank?
It’s common for it to spend the first few days staying close to rockwork, then expand its route as it learns where food and grazing spots are.
What’s a common way hobbyists help a Scopas Tang accept a new tankmate?
A clear acclimation box or temporary divider lets the fish see each other without contact, which often lowers intensity once the new fish is released.
What if it ignores a nori sheet?
Trying different seaweed types (red/green sheets or blends) and placing the clip where it already grazes can help it “connect” the sheet with food.
Can I keep a Scopas Tang with a Yellow or Purple Tang?
Because they’re similarly shaped Zebrasoma tangs, many hobbyists plan the order of introduction carefully and keep the aquascape spacious so each fish can establish its own lanes.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
