Scott’s Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus cf. scottorum) is a reef-safe fairy wrasse known for fast, midwater cruising and bold, shifting colors—often blue-green with red accents that read differently under actinic vs. daylight lighting. This species is naturally found across the South Pacific reef zone, and it brings constant motion to reef tanks without disturbing corals.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady laps through open water, then quick check-ins to the rockwork between passes
- Short “display” moments where fins extend and color contrast sharpens during social interactions
- A consistent daily rhythm: active throughout the day, then settling into the rockwork to rest at night
- Confident feeding behavior, often meeting food in the water column and grabbing pieces on the move
For best results, provide a mature reef with plenty of rock structure plus clear swimming lanes. Feed a mix of small meaty foods in a few smaller servings so it can browse naturally during active periods. When mixing wrasses, introduce this fish thoughtfully (often later in the plan) and keep a tight-fitting lid or mesh top to support normal darting behavior.
Will a Scott’s Fairy Wrasse change sex or coloration over time?
In groups, the dominant fish can transition and develop stronger “male” patterning, and individuals may show different intensity depending on social setting and lighting.
Does this wrasse need a sand bed to sleep?
Fairy wrasses typically settle into the rockwork to rest at night rather than burying, so stable hiding zones in the aquascape matter most.
Why does it “flash” or flare at other fish?
Brief fin-flares and color boosts are common social signals, especially around other wrasses or at feeding time, and they often fade once the pecking order is established.
Can it be kept with other fairy wrasses if I want a wrasse collection?
Many hobbyists have the best success by mixing clearly different species types and adding the most assertive fairy wrasse later, after other fish are settled.
How do I keep its color looking strong long-term?
Stable reef conditions, low day-to-day stress, and a varied meaty diet tend to support the most consistent coloration and display behavior.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
