The Scribbled Boxfish (Ostracion solorense), also called the reticulate boxfish, is a compact Indo-Pacific boxfish with a rigid “box” shape and fine, maze-like lines that create a scribbled pattern across the body.
What You’ll Observe:
- Slow, deliberate cruising along rockwork and open sand, with frequent stops to inspect surfaces
- Regular “picking” at live rock and the sandbed between feedings, like a constant grazer
- A consistent daily route in the aquarium, often staying close to shelter and corners
- Strong interest in food once it recognizes your feeding routine, especially with sinking items
To succeed, provide a mature aquarium with lots of live rock structure and calm areas where it can browse at its own pace. Offer a varied menu of small meaty foods plus algae-based options, and use mostly sinking foods so it can feed naturally from the bottom.
Will it bother snails or ornamental shrimp?
Some individuals will investigate small mobile invertebrates as part of normal browsing, so choose sturdier clean-up crew options and keep feeding consistent.
Why does it spend so much time “picking” at rocks and sand?
That browsing behavior is typical for boxfish and is part of how they stay busy between meals; it shouldn’t replace scheduled feedings.
What foods do hobbyists have the best long-term success with?
A rotation of frozen meaty foods (like mysis and chopped seafood), high-quality pellets/flake, and sheets of nori tends to keep them engaged and eating steadily.
Do they usually take food from the surface?
Most keepers focus on sinking or water-column foods so the fish can feed lower in the tank where it naturally spends time.
Can I keep two Scribbled Boxfish together?
Most aquarists keep them singly; attempts at pairs are usually planned for larger systems and are easiest when both fish are introduced at the same time.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
