The Shaggy (Hispid) Anglerfish (Antennarius hispidus) is a bottom-dwelling frogfish that uses a small “fishing lure” to draw prey within striking range. Its shaggy, textured body and variable coloration help it blend into reef rock and sponge-like surfaces, so it often looks like part of the aquascape.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spending long stretches perched on rockwork or the sand, then repositioning by “walking” on its fins
- Holding still and gently working its lure, especially when food is nearby
- Sudden, fast feeding strikes that are over in a moment
- Color and pattern shifts over time as it settles into your tank’s surfaces
- Choosing a favorite perch and returning to it between meals
How to succeed: Provide stable perches with smooth rock and a soft substrate so it can rest comfortably near the bottom. Offer appropriately sized meaty marine foods a few times per week, and use a clear feeding stick or tongs to present food right in its strike zone. Plan tankmates around prey-size (anything small enough to swallow will be treated like food), and use a careful, underwater transfer style during acclimation.
How long does it usually take to accept non-live foods?
Many keepers start with live foods, then transition using a clear feeding stick and consistent presentation in the same spot.
What’s a good way to “trigger” a feeding response?
Short, twitchy movements that mimic a small shrimp or fish tend to work better than slowly waving food around.
Is it normal for it to sit motionless most of the day?
Yes—this is an ambush predator, so long resting periods between short repositioning “walks” are typical.
Will it change color quickly after being added?
Color shifts can happen as it settles and matches surrounding surfaces, and it may continue adjusting over time.
Can it be moved or bagged like a typical fish?
Most hobbyists aim for underwater transfers (container-to-container) so the fish stays supported and calm during moves.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
