The Six Bar Angelfish (Pomacanthus sexstriatus) is a large marine angelfish seen in the trade most often as a juvenile with bold black-and-white banding. As it matures, it develops a tan body with dark vertical bars, a pale stripe behind the eye, and a fine pattern of blue spotting across the body and fins.
What You’ll Observe:
- A steady “patrol” pattern’cruising rockwork, then looping back through the same routes
- Regular grazing and pecking at surfaces throughout the day as it explores the tank
- Use of caves and overhangs as a home base, especially when lights first change
- Noticeable attention to the aquarist at feeding time, often coming to the front glass
To do well long-term, provide a spacious aquarium with substantial live rock and multiple swim-throughs so it can establish a consistent route and resting spots. Offer a varied mix of algae-based foods plus meaty items (and angelfish-focused foods) in multiple small feedings for best condition.
Why does the pattern change so much from juvenile to adult?
Juveniles and adults have very different coloration, and the shift happens gradually as the fish grows.
Is it normal for this angelfish to “grunt” or make sounds?
Yes’many keepers hear brief grunting/clicking noises, especially during interactions or when startled.
Will it “pick” at rocks all day even when it’s well-fed?
Yes, constant grazing and investigating surfaces is typical behavior and part of how large angels spend their day.
Does it usually become more interactive over time?
Many owners report it learns the feeding routine and becomes more front-and-center once it’s settled into a consistent schedule.
Can it be kept with other large angelfish if the tank is big enough?
It can work in very large systems when territories are clearly defined, and introductions are planned so each fish can establish space.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
