The Six Line Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia) is a small, active reef wrasse known for six orange horizontal stripes over a violet-blue body and a green tail. It spends the day weaving through live rock and coral branches, naturally hunting tiny hitchhiker pests in established reef tanks.
What You’ll Observe:
- Quick, stop-and-go “patrol” loops through rockwork, with frequent short darts into crevices
- Regular foraging pecks along the rock and frag plugs as it searches for small invertebrates
- A consistent “home route” it repeats, especially around favorite caves and overhangs
- At lights-out, it settles into a tight rock nook and stays tucked in until morning
Provide a reef with plenty of porous live rock and multiple hiding gaps so it can move and forage naturally. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, finely chopped seafood, and quality pellets) so it can grab bites easily throughout the water column. A snug, gap-free lid helps this active swimmer stay confidently in the display.
How long does it usually take before it “shows its full personality” in a reef?
Most settle into a repeatable daily patrol once they’ve mapped the rockwork and feeding routine, often becoming more visible at consistent feeding times.
Will it still hunt pests if I feed prepared foods daily?
Many keepers find it continues to pick and forage between meals; regular feeding simply keeps its energy steady and reduces frantic searching.
Can I add other wrasses later if I already have a Six Line?
It typically goes best when new wrasses are introduced with a clear plan to break up territories (multiple hiding zones and a changed “map” of the rockwork), so everyone has space to reset routines.
Is it normal for a Six Line Wrasse to vanish for a few days?
Yes—some individuals spend stretches deep in the rockwork, especially after changes in aquascape, lighting schedule, or new tankmates, then resume normal laps.
What’s the most reliable way to remove one without tearing down the reef?
Fish traps and baited bottle-style traps placed along its usual patrol route tend to work best, since it learns patterns and checks the same spots repeatedly.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
