The Snowflake Moray Eel (Echidna nebulosa) is a pebble-toothed moray with a white body patterned in dark, branching blotches and yellow eyes, commonly kept in predator tanks and FOWLR setups. It naturally comes from the Indo-West Pacific region and spends much of its time working through rockwork and crevices.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching with its head out of a favorite cave, then becoming more active toward evening hours
- Following scent trails at feeding time and quickly learning a routine around a feeding stick or tongs
- Moving between a few “home base” dens as it explores the rock structure
- Regular mouth-opening “yawns,” which is normal breathing behavior for morays
To succeed, provide a tight-fitting lid and multiple smooth caves/tunnels so it can fully retreat and turn around comfortably. Offer meaty marine foods on tongs and keep filtration strong, since morays are enthusiastic eaters and can add noticeable bioload.
Why does my Snowflake Eel keep opening and closing its mouth?
Morays often “gape” to move water across their gills. This is normal behavior even when the eel is calm and resting in a cave.
How long does it usually take before I see it out in the open?
Many settle in by picking a primary den first, then expand their patrol routes over the next couple of weeks as feeding becomes predictable.
Will it learn to take food from tongs (and stop rushing the surface)?
In many tanks it quickly associates a feeding tool with food. Feeding near its den and keeping a consistent routine helps the eel stay focused and controlled at mealtime.
Is it normal if it rearranges sand or knocks small rocks while exploring?
Yes’snowflakes push through tight spaces and “test” openings. Securing rockwork on the tank bottom (not on sand) helps keep the layout stable.
Can I keep more than one moray eel together?
Some hobbyists do in larger systems with multiple separate dens, but success usually depends on space and having enough hiding spots so each eel can claim its own tunnel network.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
