The Spike Fin Goby (Discordipinna griessingeri), also known as the Spikefin/Flaming Prawn Goby, is a nano reef fish with a white body, orange striping, and a tall, spiked dorsal fin it will raise and “flick” while hunting. It stays close to rockwork and rubble pockets, making it a great fit for aquarists who enjoy watching small-scale reef behavior up close.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short “scooting” movements across sand and rubble, with quick dashes back into cover
- Fin-flicking and fin-flaring displays while it searches for tiny prey
- Most activity near the bottom, often appearing more around dusk and after lights-out
Provide lots of tight crevices and low-to-moderate flow areas near the sandbed so it can move between cover points. Offer very small meaty foods (and/or a mature microfauna population), and use a pipette to place food near its preferred hangout; a snug lid helps keep this tiny goby in the tank.
Is it normal if I barely see it during the day?
Yes—many Spike Fin Gobies spend long stretches in rockwork and rubble pockets and tend to show more often around dusk or after lights-out.
Does this goby pair with a pistol shrimp?
No, it’s not a shrimp-partner goby, even though it’s sometimes grouped with “shrimp gobies” in hobby talk.
How can I make sure it gets enough food in a mixed tank?
Turning flow off briefly and placing tiny foods near its hiding area helps it feed without needing to compete in open water.
Can I keep two Spike Fin Gobies together?
Some hobbyists have success with pairs introduced at the same time, especially when the tank offers multiple separate hideouts.
Do they ever jump?
They can, so a tight-fitting lid or covered openings is a smart part of the setup.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
