The Spotted Watchman Shrimpgoby is a sand-bed, burrow-oriented goby that helps keep areas of the substrate turned over as it excavates and maintains its home. It’s a bottom-dweller from Indo-Pacific reef zones that spends most of its time posted at a burrow entrance, often in a classic shrimp goby setup with a pistol shrimp.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching at the edge of a burrow and making quick dashes to grab food before returning to its “doorway”
- Carrying mouthfuls of sand and shifting small bits of rubble to reinforce its tunnel
- A consistent “watchman” posture—hovering low and scanning the area around its shelter
- If paired, frequent contact with a pistol shrimp as they share the same burrow system
To help it settle in, provide a stable sand bed with scattered rubble and rockwork that’s firmly supported so digging doesn’t shift the scape. Offer small meaty foods like mysis or enriched brine multiple times per day, and let it feed close to its burrow so it can eat confidently. Maintain a tight-fitting lid so sudden dashes don’t turn into jumps.
Will it disappear for days after you add it?
It’s common for it to spend long stretches inside a new burrow at first, then become much more predictable once it has a settled “home base.”
How long does it usually take to pair with a pistol shrimp?
Many pairs connect quickly once they encounter each other, but some take days to a few weeks depending on where each one establishes a starting burrow.
Does it need a pistol shrimp to do well?
It can thrive without one, but many keepers notice more daytime activity and more consistent “out in the open” behavior when a compatible pistol shrimp is present.
Will it undermine my rocks when it digs?
It tends to dig under edges and around rubble, so the best approach is placing rockwork on the tank bottom or solid supports, then adding sand around it.
How do I make sure the shrimp also gets food in a goby-and-shrimp pair?
Feeding near the burrow entrance helps—many pairs learn a routine where the goby grabs items in the water while leftovers drift down to the shrimp.
