Steinit’s Shrimp Goby (Amblyeleotris steinitzi) is a prawn goby with a pale body and bold, reddish-brown banding that’s designed for life on sandy bottoms. In reef tanks, it’s most often seen posted at a burrow entrance, and it may form the classic shrimp goby + pistol shrimp pair when given the opportunity.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a “home base” on the sand and returning to the same burrow area throughout the day
- Perching at the entrance like a watchman goby, then backing in quickly when startled
- Short foraging trips over nearby sand and rubble, followed by quick retreats
- Sand being shifted and piled around the burrow as the den is maintained
To help it settle in, provide a sand bed with a few small rubble pieces near a rock that sits securely on the tank bottom. Offer small meaty foods that sink (like mysis or finely chopped seafood) and place them near the burrow so it can feed confidently. A calm layout with clear “front porch” space near the den helps you see this goby more often.
Do I need to keep Steinit’s Shrimp Goby with a pistol shrimp?
No—many shrimp gobies do well on their own, but pairing can make their den behavior more consistent and interesting to observe.
Why does it disappear for days after going into the tank?
It’s common for shrimp gobies to commit to one burrow and stay close while they map the area; once it learns the feeding routine, it usually shows up more predictably.
Will it accept a pistol shrimp added later?
Often yes if the shrimp can access the same sand/rubble zone; placing the shrimp near the goby’s established burrow area can speed up pairing.
Will the burrow-building mess up my aquascape?
They mainly move sand and small rubble; if your main rocks are sitting on the tank bottom (not on sand), their digging is less likely to change the structure.
Can I keep more than one shrimp goby in the same tank?
It can work in larger setups when each fish can claim its own burrow zone; adding them with plenty of separated den sites tends to go more smoothly.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
