The Striped Blenny (Meiacanthus grammistes) is a fang blenny recognized by tan-to-brown striping that runs the length of the body and a slightly harptail look as it matures. It’s a reef-safe fish that spends time in the open and around rockwork, giving you a constant, small-fish presence without needing a large footprint. Like other fang blennies, it has venomous fangs used for defense rather than hunting.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on rock ledges, then making quick, confident darts into the water column
- Regular swimming laps that keep it visible instead of buried in the rock all day
- A noticeable change in boldness after the first few days as it learns your feeding routine
- Short, direct interactions with tankmates where it holds its position instead of fleeing
For best results, provide plenty of live rock with overhangs and shaded crevices so it can choose a home base. Offer a varied mix of small meaty foods like mysis and finely chopped seafood along with quality prepared foods, and keep portions small and consistent. It does best when it isn’t forced to compete with overly pushy feeders at every meal.
Will a Striped Blenny bite you during tank maintenance?
Most keepers report they avoid hands and tools, and the fangs are primarily a defensive feature rather than something the fish uses during routine cleaning.
Why did my Striped Blenny disappear after I added it?
It’s common for them to claim a tight crevice and stay out of sight for a stretch, then start showing up more predictably once they associate the tank with feeding time.
Is it normal if it seems more active near the end of the light cycle?
Yes—some individuals settle into a pattern of cruising more in the late afternoon/evening, especially if that’s when the tank is calm and food is offered.
Can I keep two together or mix it with other fang blennies?
Many hobbyists have success with pairs and even mixing Meiacanthus species when the tank has multiple bolt-holes and the fish are introduced with enough space to spread out.
How do I get it feeding confidently in a community reef?
Target a small amount of food near its preferred rockwork at first, then transition to broadcast feeding once it reliably comes out for meals.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
