The Striped Hogfish (Bodianus izuensis) is a small Western Pacific hogfish known for yellow-to-reddish body tones with a distinct dark horizontal stripe. It spends the day moving between open water and rockwork, giving your reef a constant, purposeful “patrol” fish that stays visible.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, confident laps around the tank with frequent stops to inspect rock crevices
- Quick, direct feeding responses once it recognizes a regular feeding routine
- A preference for weaving through caves and overhangs, then returning to open areas
- More outgoing behavior as it learns your tank’s layout and feeding schedule
Provide a stable aquascape with several caves/overhangs and enough open space for cruising. Offer meaty frozen foods (like mysis and enriched brine) plus high-quality sinking pellets so it can feed from the water column and near the rockwork. A snug lid helps support long-term success with active hogfish species.
Will a Striped Hogfish bother other wrasses in a mixed-wrasse tank?
It can be fine in some setups, but many hobbyists report hogfish becoming territorial toward wrasse-shaped tankmates over time, especially once fully settled.
Is it normal for a hogfish to “test” small clean-up crew?
Yes—hobbyists commonly report hogfish investigating (and sometimes eating) small shrimp, crabs, snails, and worm-like inverts, even when they ignore corals.
Does this species need a lid even if it seems calm?
Many keepers treat hogfish like other active wrasses and use a tight lid, since jumping can happen during sudden movement, feeding excitement, or new introductions.
Why do some hogfish seem peaceful at first and then change later?
A common pattern reported by keepers is a mellow “new fish” phase followed by increased confidence and territorial behavior once the fish has established favorite routes and sleeping spots.
How can I add new fish later without constant chasing?
Rearranging a small portion of rockwork and adding newcomers with an acclimation box is a common hobbyist approach to reduce immediate territorial focus and let the tank reset social spacing.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
